On Tuesday, the trailer for the Al Yankovic biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story was released, showcasing Daniel Radcliffe dressed in the parody master’s distinctive ’80s curly hair, mustache, and Hawaiian shirts.
The first look shows Radcliffe’s Weird Al striding around onstage with an accordion, playing “Like a Surgeon,” a classic Madonna parody. The persona promises he’ll be “full of surprises” in the clip, which teases “the true untold story” of the now-62-year-old singer, who has been making classic parody compositions for decades.
Weird will be produced by Funny or Die and Tango, and Yankovic and director Eric Appel co-wrote the story. There is currently no definite release date. Weird Al’s “torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle” will be explored in the film. According to Variety, this one is expected to be a staged mockumentary based on how it’s presented in the trailer.
“When my last movie UHF came out in 1989, I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork,” Yankovic said when the flick was announced at the top of the year. “I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule, and I am absolutely thrilled that Daniel Radcliffe will be portraying me in the film. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for.”
