Velma Now Openly Gay In New ‘Scooby-Doo’ Movie

In HBO Max’s newest animated film Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo, Velma is come out as gay.

The Halloween-themed movie from director/co-writer Audie Harrison solidifies a truth that many Scooby fans have known for a long time. Videos circulating on social media show the Kate Micucci-voiced Velma swooning over costume designer Coco Diablo (Myrna Velasco), praising her as “obviously brilliant” with a “amazing turtleneck,” trademark glasses fogging up in the process. The project was released on demand on Tuesday (it streams on Max starting on Oct. 16).

Another time, the adored detective confides in her brave co-investigator Daphne that she is “crushing big time” and needs assistance after acting aloof and hesitant.

The creators of Scooby-Doo have previously stated their wish to portray Velma Dinkley as gay. James Gunn, who wrote the script for the 2004 follow-up Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed and the 2002 live-action adaptation directed by Raja Gosnell, said in 2020 that he campaigned for his Velma to be openly queer.

“In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker wrote. “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
