Twitter confirms it is working on an edit button

Since the social network’s debut in 2006, a lot has changed on Twitter, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that users can’t edit tweets after they’ve been posted. This is about to change, as the company revealed on Tuesday that the long-awaited Edit button is in the works.

The Twitter team has been working on a feature to edit tweets “since last year,” according to the company’s TwitterComms page. The new button, which can be accessed by touching the three dots adjacent to a tweet, was also shown off on Twitter.

Details regarding how the functionality will operate are still unknown, but in a nutshell, users will be able to alter the content of a tweet after it has been sent. Many Twitter users have demanded the Edit button throughout the years. However, there is a number of users who appear to be opposed to the notion.

Elon Musk became Twitter’s largest shareholder on Monday, thus the revelation comes as a surprise. Musk polled his Twitter followers on whether they wanted a button to modify tweets, and 73 percent replied yes.

Twitter says that the Edit button will first be released as part of Twitter Blue Labs, which offers beta features to Twitter Blue subscribers. The company states that it will “learn what works, what doesn’t, and what’s possible” before making the button available to everyone.
