FX released a small teaser for the upcoming docuseries Dear Mama, focusing on the late 2Pac and his mother, Afeni Shakur, in honor of Mother’s Day. “It was my responsibility to teach 2Pac how to survive his reality,” Shakur says in the clip. “So, 2Pac do something wrong, take your little sorry self in that corner, get the New York Times and let’s have a debate about it. Not a discussion, a debate. Let me hear what your idea is, stand up, defend it.”

Dear Mama is “told through the eyes of the people who knew them best,” according to a press release from FX. Allen Hughes, whose prior directing credits include the HBO docuseries The Defiant Ones, about Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s relationship, as well as films like The Book of Eli and Menace II Society, directed with his brother Albert.

In 1996, 2Pax was killed in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting. Following his death, Afeni became the executor of his estate and established the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Georgia, which is currently closed. “Arts can save children, no matter what’s going on in their homes,” she said, per CNN. “I wasn’t available to do the right things for my son. If not for the arts, my child would’ve been lost.”
