‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Passes $800 Million to Become Tom Cruise’s Biggest Box Office Hit

Top Gun: Maverick has surpassed the $800 million milestone in global box office, making it Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film.

According to Deadline, the action film has surpassed Cruise’s previous highest grossing film, Mission Impossible: Fallout, which made $791.1 million worldwide in 2018. Maverick has grossed $806.4 million worldwide, with $422.2 million coming from domestic audiences.

The sequel to 1986’s Top Gun now has a chance to become the first Cruise picture to gross a billion dollars in theaters. However, sources tell the Hollywood Reporter that Maverick will probably gross approximately $900 million, with the lack of a China and Russia release being the only reason it won’t make $1 billion.

The news comes only a few weeks after Maverick broke the domestic box office record for Memorial Day weekend with $156 million, giving Cruise his biggest opening weekend ever. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which grossed $153 million, held the previous record for 15 years. Maverick was helped by a stronger-than-expected opening day on Sunday, which boosted the sequel’s three-day total to $126 million, a little improvement above the $124 million forecast.
