Tom Holland Said He’s Taking A Break From Social Media To Focus On His Mental Health

Tom Holland revealed to his fans over the weekend that he has quit using social media because it has a negative effect on his mental health.

In a three-minute video posted on Sunday, Holland explained why he had decided to stop using Instagram and Twitter before directing his audience to a mental health awareness campaign supported by his family’s nonprofit, The Brothers Trust.

“I have taken a break from social media for my mental health because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming,” Holland said in the video. “I get caught up and spiral when I read things about me online and ultimately it’s very detrimental to my mental state. So I decided to take a step back and delete the app.”

To make good use of this “brief return” to IG, Holland added, he wanted to get more eyes on the U.K.-based teen mental health organization stem4. Per Holland, stem4 is “a wonderfully innovative education program” with a roster of “pioneering apps” serving to offer much-needed assistance to young people.

Holland is not the first famous figure to express concern about the possible effects of widespread social media use on mental health. Selena Gomez said in April that giving up social media and the internet in general for more than four years “completely” changed her life.
