Tom Cruise in talks to shoot a movie in outer space

According to TMZ, Tom Cruise is seeking to seal a deal that will make him the first actor to shoot a full-length movie in space.

According to reports, Cruise is discussing filming at the International Space Station with the Universal Films Entertainment Group, realizing a long-term dream. While films like 2012’s Apogee of Fear and the Cruise-narrated documentary Space Station 3D were shot at the ISS, the actor hopes to make history by becoming the first person to do a space walk.

“I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space, he’s taking the world to space,” UFEG chairman Donna Langley told BBC News. “That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom … Taking a rocket up to the Space Station and shooting.”

Langley shared that a majority of the film will be shot on Earth until Cruise’s character needs to go “up to space to save the day.”

During the COVID pandemic, discussions about Cruise’s desire to film in space were put on hold, but they have just been revived. Yulia Peresild and director Klim Shipenko were slated to shoot in orbit this month, according to a May announcement from the Russian space agency Roscosmos. No word yet on how that strategy turned out.

Months earlier, it had been rumored that Cruise was collaborating with NASA on a project that would have him experience alien travel and document it.
