The Olympic torch relay for Tokyo 2020 has been cancelled on the streets with growing fears on the impact of COVID-19 which continues to cause issues for the games.
According to the BBC, flame-lighting ceremonies will replace the traditional public relay from Friday in another setback for organisers in the build-up to the event.
Officials have stated that only part of the relay will go ahead as planned which will happen in the remote Ogasawara Islands, south of the Japanese capital.
Despite public opposition, Tokyo 2020 is still due to go ahead on 23rd July as people in Japan have demanded that the games are cancelled or postponed, over fears relating to the pandemic.
Since being conducted in March, nearly half of the legs in the relay have been disrupted as other major cities including Kyoto and Hiroshima have scrapped plans for the event to go on public roads.
