The first reviews for The Batman are in, and they’re fantastic.
Matt Reeves directed and co-wrote the film, which stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader and stands out from previous adaptations. A teenage Bruce Wayne is in his second year as a masked vigilante when he must encounter the enigmatic Riddler, played by Paul Dano, in this scene. People who had already seen the film flooded social media with admiration for this newest take on the DC superhero when the review and comment embargo was released at noon on Monday.
Erik Davis of Fandango called it a “ferocious detective drama punctuated by moments of incredibly visceral action,” while Next Best Picture editor-in-chief Matt Neglia compared it to David Fincher’s Se7en, and called it “epic, dark, and thematically rich.”
Early reviews have praised Reeves’ direction, while Alex Stedman’s IGN review praises Zoe Kravitz and Paul Dano for their roles as Catwoman and Riddler, respectively. Michael Giacchino’s score, according to A.V. Club writer A.A. Dowd, is “somehow in the same league as the operatic themes Danny Elfman once lent the franchise.” The film has an early Rotten Tomatoes score of 96 percent, based on 71 reviews, with critics praising the dark new take on the character.
