An official Netflix Monopoly game tie-in has exposed certain story elements from Stranger Things Season 4 only a week before the show’s long-awaited comeback.
Images from the Monopoly game tie-deck in’s of cards have begun to leak online, according to the Hollywood Reporter, and appear to reveal important story details from the upcoming episodes, much to the dismay of the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer. According to individuals close to the brothers, the scenario caused them to have a “total meltdown.”
The game was acquired at “a nationally recognized retailer and purchased fair and square by a consumer,” according to the Reddit post that initially published the photographs, adding that “nobody stole it; nobody leaked a sample.” It’s unclear whether this is the case, but reported clones of the board have begun to appear on auction sites like eBay.
“Lessons have been learned and, I expect, there will be more cohesion going into season five,” a source added, noting that the amount of Stranger Things franchising makes it difficult to predict when something might leak ahead of time.
Stranger Things Season 4 will premiere its first volume on May 27, followed by the second half on July 1.
