Steven Gerrard sacked by Aston Villa after Fulham defeat

Following their 3-0 Premier League loss at Fulham, Steven Gerrard has left Aston Villa.

“Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that Head Coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement.

“We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future,” added a spokesperson.

Villa lost on Thursday, their fourth league match without a victory, and they now sit in 17th place on the goals scored table, barely outside the relegation zone.

In November 2021, Gerrard moved to Villa Park from Rangers when Dean Smith left.

Only 13 Premier League victories in 40 games were achieved during the former Liverpool and England midfielder’s 11-month tenure.

Harrison Reed’s superb first-half goal, an Aleksandar Mitrovic penalty, and a Tyrone Mings own goal all contributed to Fulham’s comfortable victory at Craven Cottage. Midfielder Douglas Luiz was dismissed for headbutting Mitrovic, adding insult to Villa’s injury.

Throughout the game, the visiting crowd strongly voiced its dislike for Gerrard. His chances of landing a job in the long run probably wouldn’t have increased much, even with a victory in west London.
