Spider-Man: No Way Home is on track to become the highest-grossing picture of the year after shattering box office records for 2021 during its opening weekend.
According to Variety, the picture is expected to surpass $1 billion in international box office on Christmas Day. That will make it the year’s highest-grossing picture, surpassing Chinese war film The Battle at Lake Changjin, which took in over $905 million. No Way Home will be the first cinematic film to gross $1 billion since the outbreak began, and it will do it without having been released in China.
The huge success of the MCU picture comes as the film’s team prepares to compete for an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Only one superhero comic book adaptation has previously been nominated for the prize, and that was Black Panther in 2018. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige believes the picture deserves to be recognized at award presentations as well as at the box office.
