‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ slam dunks ‘Black Widow’ at Weekend Box Office

Many predicted that Marvel’s Black Widow would top the weekend box office charts as Space Jam: A New Legacy claimed a surprise victory, tallying a projected 3-day gross of $32 million.

The sequel to the original 1996 film Space Jam, which starred Michael Jordan, has been a hit with film fanatics with a cast led by LeBron James, Don Cheadle, and Zendaya. According to Variety via Complex, on Friday, the basketball film received $13.1 million from 3,965 locations, becoming Warner Bros. largest release during the pandemic and the biggest opening for a family film since the start of COVID.

In comparison, Black Widow, last weekend’s box office leader, saw a dramatic decline of 80% in ticket sales, taking in $8 million from over 4,000 theatres on Friday. There are high expectations on the film starring Scarlett Johansson, which is expected to receive $24.6 million this weekend.
