Sadio Mane in Senegal squad despite injury scare

Despite an injury on Tuesday, Sadio Mane has been selected for Senegal’s World Cup team in Qatar.

The 30-year-old forward was taken off during Bayern Munich’s 6-1 triumph over Werder Bremen in the first half.

He will not play against Schalke on Saturday, according to the German champions, due to an injury “to the head of his right fibula.”

On November 21, Senegal will face the Netherlands in the opening round of Group A play.

“We are monitoring the situation and have sent one of our doctors to assess him,” Senegal coach Aliou Cisse said at a press conference in the Senegalese capital Dakar on Friday.

“On Thursday, Sadio spent the whole day in Munich before travelling to Austria for further tests. The good news is that he does not need an operation.

“We want the situation to evolve in two-three weeks. I don’t want to rule him out.”

Mane, a former Liverpool player, is Senegal’s top performer and icon. In February, the Teranga Lions won the Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Egypt in a penalty shootout after Mane had converted the game-winning penalty.

Less than two months later, Mane replicated the feat, scoring the go-ahead penalty as Senegal defeated Egypt on penalties in a crucial play-off to qualify for Qatar. The match put him against his former Liverpool teammate Mohammed Salah once more.
