In a March 2022 interview on Drink Champs, Remy Ma expressed her feelings regarding Doja Cat. While she was a fan of Doja Cat, the “Shether” rapper told N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN that she wasn’t sure whether she would classify the “Say So” hitmaker as a rapper.
“I don’t think she’s a rapper,” she said plainly. “Let’s be clear with that. They put her in the rapper category, I don’t think she’s a rapper. But she makes dope records, and I think she’s dope.”
Doja has dealt with this problem in the past. She was nominated for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards in May 2021, which generated outrage as many questioned her credentials as a rapper, stating instead that she was a pop singer. She has stated that she is a rapper with a proven hip-hop history who wishes to be regarded as such.
In a June 2021 interview with radio Personality Big Boy, Doja Cat stayed firm.
“I don’t find myself ever really getting caught up in the whole ‘I’m not a rapper, or I am a pop artist’ type thing,” she said honestly. “That doesn’t bother me because every song that I put out — maybe a few off [Planet Her] don’t have it — but almost every song I rap on, and I’m giving them 16s, or 8s.”
“I’m a rapper!” she affirmed. “It doesn’t matter! And I don’t care what anybody says, you know what I mean? I know who I am.”
