Red Bull found guilty of budget cap breach for 2021 F1 season

The FIA, the organization in charge of regulating the sport, has ruled Red Bull guilty of exceeding the Formula 1 budget limit.

The FIA stated that Red Bull exceeded the $145 million (£114 million) cap for 2021, adding that the violation was “minor,” the lesser of the two types of breach.

This indicates that the team’s overpayment was less than 5%, or $7.25 million.

A procedural violation of the cap was also found to have been committed by Red Bull and Aston Martin.

The FIA withheld information about how much Red Bull went above the cap, by how much, and what penalties would be imposed. It stated that it was “currently determining appropriate action.”

Red Bull said in a statement that they noted the FIA’s findings “with surprise and disappointment”.

The team added: “Our 2021 submission was below the cost-cap limit, so we need to carefully review the FIA’s findings, as our belief remains that the relevant costs are under the 2021 cost-cap amount.

“Despite the conjecture and positioning of others, there is of course a process under the regulations with the FIA which we will respectfully follow while we consider all the options available to us.”

Both teams have the option of appealing the decision.
