The 29-year-old rapper Gunna—real name Sergio Kitchens—took a plea agreement on Wednesday, according to his lawyers Steve Sadow and Don Samuel, in which he was given a time-served, suspended sentence. Since mid-May, when he and several YSL associates were named in a broad RICO indictment, the Georgia native has been imprisoned.
Gunna was freed from the Fulton County Jail shortly after it was revealed that he had accepted a plea deal.
The co-defendants, which included Young Thug, the founder of YSL Records, are charged with engaging in street gang crimes such drug possession, armed robbery, attempted murder, and aggravated assault. Gunna initially entered a not guilty plea to conspiring to break the RICO Act; but, by taking the Alford deal, the rapper has virtually admitted to the crimes while still claiming his innocence. With such an agreement, the offender can avoid the unknowns of a trial and a significantly worse sentence.
Gunna’s suspended sentence will be subject to a number of requirements, including 500 hours of community service, according to WSBTV.
It is unknown if Young Thug is anticipated to reach a comparable agreement. The rapper, real name Jeffery Lamar Williams, is still imprisoned at the age of 31.
