Adidas seems to be getting closer to hiring a replacement for departing CEO Kasper Rorsted, who will step down in 2023, months after making the announcement.

As Adidas announced today that it is in talks with Puma’s current CEO, Bjorn Gulden, as a potential successor, Rorsted’s replacement would be quite unexpected.

Adidas did not provide any other information with its announcement, however German publication Manager Magazin claims that Rorsted’s replacement is even more certain than the corporation indicates. According to a source in the industry, Gulden is the sole candidate still standing for the top job.

Gulden has a history with Adidas despite most recently playing the lead for a rival. He served as senior vice president of clothes and accessories for the company in the 1990s. In July 2013, he took over as CEO of Puma.

Arne Freundt, Puma’s current chief commercial officer, will succeed Gulden as CEO on January 1 for a predetermined four years, the company stated today.
