‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ spin-off canceled at Disney, says Margot Robbie

Disney has canceled its Margot Robbie-led Pirates of the Caribbean spinoff.

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” Robbie said in a new interview with Vanity Fair.

A Pirates movie with Jerry Bruckheimer producing was said to have the two-time Oscar nominee attached in 2020. This past May, Bruckheimer, who was responsible for the previous five installments in the series, admitted to the Sunday Times that he was “talking” to Robbie and that two separate screenplays were being developed.

“We are developing two Pirates scripts—one with her, one without,” he told the paper at the time.

It appears that Bruckheimer did not completely rule out the idea of a Johnny Depp comeback when he said, “The future is yet to be decided.” The following month, a Depp representative shot down rumors that the actor had signed a $300 million contract to play Captain Jack Sparrow once more.
