The iconic video game franchise BioShock is getting a cinematic adaptation, this time from Netflix.
According to Deadline, Netflix will team up with Take-Two Interactive, the game’s parent company. BioShock has yet to be assigned a writer or director; Vertigo Entertainment and Take-Two are scheduled to act as producers.
An adaptation was originally in production at Universal with Gore Verbinski, the director of Pirates of the Caribbean, but the project was shelved due to budget concerns in 2008. In 2013, Verbinski and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) were in negotiations to create the picture together, but the two apparently fell out, and the project was abandoned owing to finance problems and the possibility of a R classification.
BioShock is a dystopian first-person shooter that has been praised for its engaging plot and hard-hitting combat across its several sequels. Since its first release in 2007, the series has sold over 39 million copies worldwide, spawning many sequels and upgraded versions. Cloud Chamber is currently working on a new episode.
