Morbius Flops In Theaters After Returning Due To Meme Popularity

Despite the popularity of the swarm of Morbius memes, the Jared Leto-starring chapter in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe’s theatrical comeback did not result in a box office turnaround this weekend.

According to Forbes, the critically panned picture made an estimated $300,000 on its comeback. The picture debuted in theaters in early April, with a total domestic gross of roughly $73 million (according to Box Office Mojo).

According to a recent tweet from Exhibitor Relations, the film was re-released in little over 1,000 theaters over the weekend. For the re-release, this resulted in a per-theater average of roughly $289. Newer tentpole movies, such as the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Top Gun: Maverick, are commonly shown on at least three times as many screens. For its original run, Morbius was shown on over 4,000 screens.

To put things in perspective, A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, which debuted in late March, was shown on 1,434 screens this weekend, with a per-theater average of $1,409. In other words, the box office performance of Morbius is unlikely to meet the expectations of the Leto film’s creators.
