Blonde, the Ana de Armas-led biopic about Marilyn Monroe, has its first trailer online thanks to Netflix.
Monroe’s troubled personal life is highlighted in the somber aesthetic of the movie, which debuts on the streaming platform on September 23. The trailer for the film, which was written and directed by Andrew Dominik, whose most recent narrative film was 2012’s Killing Them Softly, teases Monroe’s high-profile relationships and her subsequent drug addiction.
The movie is famous for being the first original Netflix production to receive the NC-17 rating; this apparently caused Dominik and the company some friction. But in a February interview with ScreenDaily, he said that despite the streamer’s “insistence” on hiring editor Jennifer Lame to “curb the excesses of the movie,” he has “nothing but gratitude” for it. Sexual material is the reason for the classification.
“It’s a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the fucking audience’s problem,” Dominik said. “It’s not running for public office.”
