Manchester United are hoping to sign Christian Eriksen, a Danish midfielder, before the start of the new season.
After a spectacular recovery with Brentford in the second part of last season, it was expected the 30-year-old would choose to stay in London.
The Bees hoped Eriksen would stay, although Tottenham Hotspur were said to be interested in re-signing him.
However, neither team has reached an agreement, allowing United to make a bid for the free agent.
Eriksen suffered a heart episode while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020 in June, but was able to restart his career after receiving an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
Eriksen accepted Brentford’s offer of a six-month contract in January after being released by Inter Milan – since the ICD device is not authorized in Serie A – and manager Thomas Frank constantly said that the Bees wanted to keep the former Ajax star.
Eriksen joined Inter in January 2020, and under current Spurs manager Antonio Conte, he helped them win the Serie A title in 2020-21.
Conte stated “the door is always open” to him training with Tottenham before returning to competitive football with Brentford.
