Jack Grealish’s long-awaited move from Aston Villa to Manchester City was complete on Thursday in a British transfer record deal worth £100m.
Grealish, who had signed a contract extension with Villa last summer and received another offer on the table from the Midlands side at the end of the past season. However, City decided to trigger the £100m release clause in Grealish’s contract.
It’s no secret that City manager Pep Guardiola has admired Grealish as the England international leaves the armband behind at Villa having made 213 appearances for the club, scoring 32 goals.
The previous transfer record in English football was set by Manchester United in 2016 as Paul Pogba re-joined from Juventus for £93.25m.
Of course, it was an emotional goodbye for Grealish having released his statement on the move via social media.
