Luka Doncic’s triple-double of 60 points, the first in NBA history, helped the Dallas Mavericks defeat the New York Knicks 126-121 in overtime.
The 23-year-old Slovenian recorded double digits in all three important attacking stats, scoring 60 points, 21 rebounds, and 10 assists.
He intentionally missed a free throw with the Mavericks behind 115-113 in the final seconds before grabbing a rebound and making a jump shot to force overtime.
“I’m tired, I need a beer,” he said.
Doncic surpasses Wilt Chamberlain to become the youngest player in NBA history to produce a 50-point triple-double, and he is only the sixth player overall to do so.
With less than 45 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the hosts down 110-101, his performance propelled an incredible comeback victory for the home team.
The pinnacle of his team’s comeback was Doncic’s choice to purposely throw his free-throw attempt against the backboard, win the ball in the subsequent scuffle, and maintain his poise and accuracy to sink his shot.
“I just threw it up, I was kind of lucky,” he admitted. “We were down, we came back, this is an amazing feeling.”
