Luis Suarez set to sign for his boyhood club Nacional

Luis Suarez, a former striker for Liverpool and Barcelona, says he has “a preliminary agreement” to return to Nacional in his native Uruguay.

The 35-year-old, whose contract with Atletico Madrid expired this summer, is now a free agent.

It is anticipated that Suarez won’t join Nacional again until at least the beginning of the November 2022 World Cup.

In a video on social media, he said details would be finalised and “we hope to reach the agreement we all desire”.

Following their association with the forward, over 20,000 Nacional supporters wore Suarez masks during a recent game.

At the age of 18, he made his professional debut for Nacional in 2005, and the following year, after helping them win the Uruguayan league title, he moved to Europe with Groningen.

“First of all I would like to say thank you for the great affection shown to me and my family these last few days,” said Suarez.

He added that this had made it impossible “to reject the possibility of returning to play for Nacional and we have a preliminary agreement with the club”.
