Lil Nas X has released “Star Walkin'” in advance of the most recent League of Legends world championship, not long after joining forces with the game’s developer Riot Games.
The song, which was also accompanied by an animated music video, is X’s second release of the year after “Late to da Party,” which he collaborated on with YoungBoy Never Broke Again. The song was created for the 2022 League of Legends World Championship, which begins the following week and concludes on Saturday, November 5, at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
“I’m not really much of a gamer anymore. I haven’t been since a teenager. But for whatever reason, I have a huge gamer fan base, and this is sick for them,” X told Zane Lowe on Apple Music upon premiering the track. “Making this song was a lot of fun. I had the verses forever, and it took, no joke, 30 different, 40 different 50, I don’t know how many different hooks, to get the hook to a place where I’m, ‘Okay, this is something I like. That’s cool.’ But overall I had a fun time in the studio. I had a fun time putting these pop elements and drill elements together. I thought it was really cool.”
During his chat with Lowe, he also said that his “creative spirit is honestly in the garbage can,” but he can “feel” it coming back. “I’m not worried because I know it’s going to come and I know it’s going to be the best shit I’ve ever made,” he said. “I’m super confident in that, and I’m just happy to be in the in-between right now.”
