Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner urge Instagram to stop copying TikTok

Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner have added their voices to the calls for Instagram to stop copying TikTok’s emphasis on video-based content and go back to favoring images.

Make Instagram Instagram Again was the message both sisters shared on their IG Stories for their combined 687 million followers.

The post continues, “Stop trying to be TikTok I just want to see cute photos of my friends. Sincerely, Everyone.”

Jenner and Kardashian reposted the petition to their Stories with the message as the cover image. Before the sisters’ reshare, it had less than 100,000 signatures since it launched on July 22. The petition currently has more than 150,500 signatures as of publication.

In an effort to compete with TikTok, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, the company that owns IG, has actively pushed the app to emphasize more short-form video content. However, many users have not welcomed the shift. Tuesday saw the posting of a video by Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram, in response to the mounting criticism.

“I’m hearing a lot of concerns about right now about photos and how we’re shifting to video,” he said. “Now, I want to be clear, we’re gonna continue to support photos. It’s part of our heritage. … That said, I need to be honest: I do believe that more and more of Instagram is going to become video over time. We see this even if we do nothing. … So we’re gonna have to lean into that shift.”
