‘Joker’ Sequel Confirmed by Director Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix

The Joker is returning in a new solo film. Todd Phillips, the writer and director of The Joker, shared a photo of a script cover on Instagram, indicating that he’s presently working on Joker 2 — or Joker: Folie à Deux, as the script puts it.

Along with Phillips’ photo of the script, he also included a photo of Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the Joker, reading the script. This appears to confirm that Phoenix will return to reprise his part in the 2019 film’s sequel. Phillips’ co-writer Scott Silver, whose name appears on the sequel’s script, is also back for the sequel.

Another mystery surrounding Joker 2 is what the plot will be. The title of the script, Joker: Folie à Deux, is a psychological term for a mental disease that affects two or more people, generally from the same family. Based on the narrative of the previous film and the possibility that Thomas Wayne is the real father of the Joker, it’s very likely that this film will introduce Batman and tie him to the Joker using the Folie à Deux concept, implying a relationship that goes beyond familial.

Of course, we’ll have to wait for additional details to know for sure what the film will be about.
