You’ve probably heard a rumor recently about Johnny Depp returning to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, replete with a rumored $300 million deal.
A representative for Depp responded to the allegation on Tuesday, assuring People that any such reports are in fact “false.” Naturally, given that the claimed claim’s apparent source is unreliable, this was to be expected.
The fifth installment in the bigger Pirates film series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released in 2017. Jack Whigham, a representative for Depp, stated at a much-discussed defamation trial in May that an op-ed written by Amber Heard had a “extremely impactful” effect on the actor’s career.
Following the publishing of the op-ed in 2018, Whigham claimed, citing the Associated Press, that a verbal agreement for close to $23 million in connection with a sixth Pirates movie was off the table.
In the end, the jury decided in favor of Depp. Heard expressed her fears about the likelihood of more legal action in a later discussion with Savannah Guthrie. She also defended her choice to write the op-ed, claiming that it wasn’t her intention for it to focus just on her connection with Depp.
