James Gunn confirmed that under his and producer Peter Safran’s leadership, the DC Universe will follow a more organized and consistent approach.

Gunn replied, “Yes, most definitely, the DCU will be connected across film and TV (and animation),” when asked on Twitter if there would be other character stand-alone TV shows, akin to the HBO Max series Peacemaker, that would “add to the story for the DCEU.”

Gunn’s statement supports what David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said in his keynote address earlier this month. “I think in the next few years, you’re going to see a lot of growth and opportunity around DC,” Zaslav said, per IndieWire. “There’s not going to be four Batmans.”

The phrase “four Batmans” refers to the three actors who have played the part in various projects: Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, and Robert Pattinson.

A more connected universe will immediately evoke comparisons to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a model that earlier iterations of the DC Universe have seemed to reject. It made sense that Gunn, who took over as co-chair of DC Studios earlier this month alongside Safran, would not be against adopting the strategy of Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, who he had a close working relationship with.
