“Jackass Forever” is the highest-grossing film of the weekend

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jackass Forever topped the U.s box office in its first weekend.

The beloved franchise’s fifth edition earned $23.5 million in its first weekend, slightly above forecasts. However, for a picture that cost $10 million to make and through many pandemic-related delays, it was a more than acceptable haul.

Another issue that surrounded the release of Jackass Forever was the demographics of the audience. Since Jackass 3D was released 12 years ago, it was unclear whether the targeted 18- to 34-year-old demographic would show out to watch what may be the franchise’s final installment. Three-quarters of the viewership for Forever was under the age of 35, with the aforementioned demo accounting for 67 percent of the total.

“In a business that doesn’t surprise all that often, it’s sure nice to know that surprises — good ones — can still happen,” Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution for Paramount, said, per Variety. “I was pretty heartened by the percentage of moviegoers over 35. Who knew?”

Jackass Forever had a remarkably good Rotten Tomatoes score in the days preceding up to its release, which previously hovered around 90%, but has now dropped to a still excellent 85 percent.

Moonfall, the newest catastrophe picture directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) and starring Halle Berry, was on the other extreme of the American box office spectrum. It landed in second place with only $10.1 million in revenue, which is a poor result for a movie that cost at least $138 million to produce.
