India Bridge Collapses Into River, Killing at Least 134 People

In the western Indian state of Gujara, a pedestrian bridge collapsed on Sunday night, killing at least 134 people.

According to CNN, there were close to 200 people on the bridge when it fell. According to the home minister for Gujarat, Harsh Sanghavi, there are 30 youngsters on the list of victims, with women and senior persons making up the majority of the dead. Authorities said that over 177 individuals have been saved.

In the city of Morbi, a 755-foot-long bridge that was initially constructed in 1877 during British colonialism spans the Machchhu River. In the incident’s video, you can see the bridge collapse as hundreds of people fall into the sea.

“People were hanging from the bridge after the accident, but they slipped and fell into the river when it collapsed,” an eyewitness told Reuters. “I could not sleep the entire night as I had helped in the rescue operation. I brought a lot of children to the hospital.”

Since then, nine persons have been detained by the law; all of them are connected to the Oreva group, the company in charge of maintaining and operating the bridge.
