In primary schools in New York, the “Squid Game” Halloween costume has been banned

Halloween costumes depicting characters from the blockbuster Netflix comedy “Squid Game” have been prohibited at some primary schools in New York, citing the show’s mature themes and violence. The Netflix original series “Squid Game” is about a group of financially strapped adults in South Korea who play lethal, violent versions of children’s games in the hopes of winning a cash reward.

School principals “wanted to make sure our families are aware that it would be inappropriate for any student to wear to school a Halloween costume from this show because of the potential violent messages aligned with the costume,” according to the superintendent of the Fayetteville-Manlius School District, which includes the elementary school’s Enders Road, Mott Road, and Fayetteville.

According to a school official, parents were notified of the decision through email.

Principals have requested families to speak with their children and “reinforce the school message that activities linked with aggressive conduct are not suitable for recess,” according to Superintendent Dr. Craig Tice.
Other schools have also issued warnings about the show’s material being inappropriate for minors. Central Integrated Primary School in the United Kingdom sent a warning to parents earlier this month, urging them to “please be mindful of what your children are accessing.”
