The Wizarding World’s first transgender character will debut in Hogwarts Legacy.

The owner of the Three Broomsticks tavern in the game’s Hogsmeade Village is a character by the name of Sirona Ryan that players will encounter in the new open-world role-playing Harry Potter game.

When players ask Sirona Ryan about how she knows a goblin named Lodgok, Ryan replies: “Hadn’t seen him in years when he came in a few months ago. But, he recognized me instantly. Which is more than I can say for some of my own classmates. Took them a second to realize I was actually a witch, not a wizard.”

Given that JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books and the Wizarding World, has made many anti-trans comments recently, the inclusion of a transgender character in Hogwarts Legacy is noteworthy. However, Rowling is not atoning for her transphobia with this. Rowling was not engaged in the game’s development, as noted on the game’s official website.

With a rare capacity to access powerful, old magic, fifth-year Hogwarts student in Hogwarts Legacy welcomes players on an epic quest. As they learn spells and potions as a beginner wizard in the immersive game, players can go throughout Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest, and the surrounding Overland area.
