There were incredible celebrations at the end of the men’s high jump competition at Tokyo 2020 as a gold medal was shared for the first time in athletics since 1912.
Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim and Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi were both awarded gold medals as neither could match the Olympic record of 2.39m with each registering three failed attempts. In the two-hour event, Barshim and Tamberi recorded best clearances of 2.37 metres.
No silver medal was awarded in high jump as Maksim Nedasekau of Belarus was awarded Bronze. Nedasekau also cleared 2.37 metres but had more failed attempts to his name over the thrilling competition which lasted for two hours.
