From 2024, new UEFA qualification rules may see five English teams competing in the Champions League

UEFA approved major changes to the Champions League format earlier this week, which will affect the competition starting in 2024/25.

To begin with, the group stage will be expanded from 32 to 36 teams.

There were intentions to award two of those spots to clubs based on their prior European performance, but those ideas have since been abandoned.

Instead, two of the four additional spots will be determined by a country’s clubs’ performance in Europe the previous season.

If such regulation were in effect this season, the Premier League and the Dutch Eredivisie would be awarded the additional Champions League qualifying spots, which would be awarded to the team that ended one position behind the present Champions League qualification berths.

Because Premier League clubs frequently go to the final stages of European competitions, we should expect five English clubs to compete in the Champions League each season.

According to ESPN’s Dale Johnson, the number of teams from the same organization that may compete in the Champions League is no longer limited.

There’s also the possibility – though rare – that seven English clubs will compete in Europe’s top league.
