Mickey Drexler, the former CEO of Gap, has revealed that he told Kanye West not to partner with the fashion giants.
Speaking to Yahoo Finance, Drexler believed that working with Gap on a long-term basis “doesn’t work for someone like Kanye.”
“I probably shouldn’t say this but I told him he shouldn’t do the deal because it doesn’t make any sense in my opinion,” he told the outlet. “He is not a corporate person and Gap is a big corporation.”
Although Drexler cited the success of the YEEZY Gap Round Jacket which was recently released at $200, he’s adamant that the Gap and Ye are on different pages when it comes to product innovation.
The 76-year-old is quoted by Hypebeast saying, “So, I know the jacket sold out,” he stated. “They did $7 million USD on the jacket overnight. He is a smart guy but he shouldn’t have done it. And I don’t think they should have done it, either.”
YEEZY Gap is the collection line between the two parties after West agreed a 10-year partnership with the company in June 2020. The deal will see royalties and potential sales-performance equity awarded to the YEEZY brand in what Gap sees as a forward-thinking collaboration.
During his live streaming event held at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz stadium last month in the build-up to his new album DONDA, West wore a red version of the Round jacket with a black colourway also released by Gap.
