For Sony Pictures, Bad Bunny has been revealed as the new Marvel hero ‘El Muerto’

Bad Bunny, or Benito Antonio Martnez Ocasio, has been cast in the role of El Muerto for a solo film based on the Spider-Man character and has been confirmed as Marvel’s newest superhero in Sony’s portfolio. The film is set to be released in theaters in January 2024. Ocasio, a Grammy Award winner, will be the first Latino actor to star in a live-action Marvel film.

For those unfamiliar with the El Muerto, he is a wrestler whose powers are passed down down the generations in the form of a mask that grants him superhuman strength. This character has faced up against Spider-Man in the comic books. At the CinemaCon event, Sony revealed Bad Bunny’s hiring, and the rapper stated his enthusiasm for the project.

According to Variety, Ocasio said, “To bring El Muerto to life is just incredible .. so exciting.” He also revealed that he has been a fan of wrestling since he was a child and considering his Marvel character’s talents, the actor is excited to take on the role.

The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, will be released in June 2023, according to the other Sony-Marvel projects unveiled at CinemaCon 2022. Apart from Bad Bunny, Dakota Johnson, who has been cast in Madame Web, is another fresh addition to the Marvel-Sony roster. Another major news made at CinemaCon was the confirmation of a third installment in Tom Hardy’s Venom series, which would be released in 2024.
