The first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, which stars Margot Robbie as the eponymous Mattel doll, has been released by Warner Bros.

The teaser begins with a parody of 2001: A Space Odyssey, showcasing the humorous tone Gerwig is looking for with the film, which she and her partner Noah Baumbach wrote. But it’s not apes finding the monolith; it’s a bunch of little girls finding a Barbie doll. The rest of the vibrant imagery is then shown to us in a series of quick glimpses, including a peek at Ryan Gosling’s portrayal of Ken.

“Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls,” the teaser opens, narrated by Helen Mirren. “But the dolls were always and forever… baby dolls. Until…”

Details of the plot have been kept a secret, but it has been in development since at least 2019 in its current form. The movie, which was co-produced by Mattel Films, Heyday Films, and Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment, is the first Barbie doll live-action movie. Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Connor Swindells, Will Ferrell, Ncuti Gatwa, America Ferrera, and Rhea Perlman are some of the other well-known actors who round out the ensemble cast.

On July 21, 2023, Barbie is scheduled to make its theatrical debut.
