The Way of Water, the long-awaited Avatar sequel, has received its last trailer.

James Cameron’s The Way of Water, which he also directed The Terminator, Aliens, and Titanic, appears to have evolved into his ultimate passion project. Cameron returned to the surface to work on the sequel to 2009’s Avatar, the all-time highest-grossing movie, after successfully developing a vehicle that would take him to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

The story that Cameron and his writing team came up with could not be condensed into a trilogy as he had initially intended, as Cameron explained in an interview with the New York Times. Hollywood is a results-based industry, which the 68-year-old director is aware of despite his lofty goals for the five-film Avatar franchise.

“It’s one thing to make a lot of money, it’s another thing to actually make a profit,” Cameron told the Associated Press. “We’re not going to keep making movies that lose money even though they look good and make a ton of money. This is a wait-and-see, let’s-put-it-out-there-and-see-if-people-embrace-it kind of situation.”
