F1 British GP red-flagged after serious Zhou crash

The opening lap accident involving Guanyu Zhou resulted in a major injury, and the 2022 Formula One British Grand Prix has been stopped.

George Russell, driving a Mercedes, and Pierre Gasly, driving an AlphaTauri, collided with Zhou in a multi-car accident, causing Zhou to turn upside down and crash into the Abbey barriers.

Gasly’s vehicle became pinched between Zhou and Russell, causing Russell to crash into the side of Zhou as he continued straight ahead at high speed through Turn 1.

Zhou’s automobile ended up barrel rolling over the tire barriers and into the catch netting, and Russell was spotted rushing over to the scene of the collision to attempt and assist Zhou.

According to Sky, Zhou was taken from his automobile on a stretcher but is now moving and doing fine.

According to Alfa Romeo team manager Frederic Vasseur, Zhou was conscious the entire time, according to Sky.

An FIA statement said: “The FIA advises that following the incident at the start of the race, emergency crews were immediately in attendance, and the drivers of Car 23 (Albon) and Car 24 (Zhou) have been taken to the medical centre. Both drivers were conscious and will be evaluated at the medical centre. Further updates will be given in due course.”
