As he begins to reassemble his Manchester United team, Erik ten Hag will attempt to sell captain Harry Maguire next summer.
The news that the club plans to move the central defender on next year will come as a major disappointment to Maguire, 29, who was just one day earlier named to Gareth Southgate’s England roster for this month’s World Cup in Qatar.
The Guardian reports that United will explore bids for their captain to help pay for Ten Hag’s squad’s ongoing revamp, although they might have to accept a significant loss on the £80 million they spent on Maguire in August 2019.
After United’s match against Fulham on Sunday, Maguire will fly to Qatar, where Southgate is likely to select him first for England’s opening match against Iran on November 21. He hasn’t played in that position for his team this year, though.
Since being selected for United’s humiliating 4-0 loss at Brentford in August and the 2-1 loss to Brighton on the opening weekend of the season, the center-back has only started one game for Ten Hag.
The Dutchman, who is said to respect Maguire’s professionalism but not his lack of speed, is reportedly seeking for additional competition at that position at the club.
