Denis Villeneuve has announced his comeback to Arakis.
Legendary and Warner Bros. announced on Tuesday that a sequel to the two-part Dune series will be released on Oct. 20, 2023, bringing the filmmaker’s ambition of completing the story to fruition.
On Oct. 22, the first Dune was released in theaters and on HBO Max. It grossed $40.1 million in its domestic premiere, the most of Villeneuve’s career and the biggest of the year for Warner Bros., which released its whole 2021 slate on streaming on the same day. Legendary has the last say on whether or not to create a sequel.
“I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune: Part Two,” Villeneuve said in a statement. “It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune and I have the fans, the cast, and crew, Legendary and Warner Bros. to thank for supporting this dream. This is only the beginning.”
