Justin Roiland, the voice actor and co-creator of Rick and Morty, has been cleared of domestic violence charges by US prosecutors.

According to a spokeswoman for the Orange County district attorney, charges against an ex-girlfriend were dropped “due to a lack of sufficient evidence beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Roiland tweeted the word “justice”, and said: “I’m still deeply shaken by the horrible lies reported about me.”

He said he wanted to “move forward”.

He added: “I’m so disappointed that so many people were so quick to judge without knowing the facts, based solely on the word of an embittered ex trying to bypass due process and have me ‘cancelled’.

“That it may have succeeded, even partially, is shameful.”

In 2013, Roiland, 43, and Dan Harmon co-created the anarchic animated sitcom Rick and Morty, about a scientist and his grandson. Roiland provided the voices for the show’s titular characters.

When the allegations first surfaced in January, Adult Swim, a division of Cartoon Network, declared that it had “ended our association” with Roiland and that the seventh season of Rick and Morty would go on without him. According to reports, his roles would be recast.

Days afterwards, Hulu dropped Roiland as well. Roiland was a producer for the animated series Koala Man and Solar Opposites on the US streaming service.

In light of the charges being dismissed, the BBC has gotten in touch with Hulu and Adult Swim for comments.
