The first trailer for Elemental, a fascinating film that demonstrates how opposites attract, is released by Disney and Pixar.

The Peter Sohn-directed movie is about an odd couple living in Element City, a vibrant metropolis populated by humanoids that stand in for earth, air, wind, and fire. Ember Lumen, a “tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman,” who tries to stay to herself when taking public transportation, is introduced in the trailer (voiced by Leah Lewis). Ember encounters Wade Ripple, a man who likes to “go with the flow,” at some point during her travels (Mamoudou Athie). They soon become close, which ultimately causes Ember to have her “beliefs about the society that they live in” tested.

The new story, according to Sohn, who previously helmed Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur in 2015, was influenced by his upbringing in New York City.

“My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx,” he said in a statement to Variety. “We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams—all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me to Elemental. Our story is based on the classic elements—fire, water, land and air. Some elements mix with each other, and some don’t. What if these elements were alive?”
