Daniil Medvedev beats Cameron Norrie to claim Los Cabos Open title in Mexico

The Los Cabos Open in Mexico saw world number one Daniil Medvedev defeat British number one Cameron Norrie in straight sets to claim his first ATP championship of 2022.

The Russian won the title for the first time since the US Open after defeating the reigning champion 7-5, 6-0.

The 26-year-old has since suffered defeat in five championship matches, but this week, he was undefeated.

“Every match was very good, but the final is always special,” he said.

“In the final, you play the best player of this week, so it’s always a high-level match and I’m really happy that I managed to show some good level, some good shots in such an important match.”

Due to the Russian player ban, Medvedev was unable to compete at Wimbledon. He had two set points at 5-4 before being broken.

He needed medical attention because of the blood after he scratched his hand on the court during the following game while reaching for a shot on the opening point.

However, he swiftly bounced back and made a crucial break to take the lead at 6-5. After Medvedev served out the opening set, Norrie, also 26 years old and the semi-final winner over Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, the second seed, had little chance of catching up.

“It was not easy,” Medvedev added. “Cam is an amazing player, so it was really intense. When you play against him, you know that you have to fight for every point.”

Next up for Medvedev as he warms up for the US Open, which begins on 29 August in New York, is the defence of his Canadian Open title before the Cincinnati Masters.

“I fought as hard as I could do, but Daniil was too good,” said Norrie.
