Crypto.com accidentally transfered $10.5M to client instead of $100 refund

A lawsuit that is gaining international attention is around an unintentional transfer of millions of dollars and the subsequent use of some of those millions.

The millions in question were “accidentally transferred” in May of last year while Crypto.com was attempting to process a refund, according to a report from Australian news outlet 7News. Crypto.com is a cryptocurrency exchange company that is well-known for being the subject of a recent Matt Damon-starring advertisement. According to the report, the refund was actually intended to be for $100 AUD, or roughly $68 USD, but the error resulted in a transfer for an estimated $10.5 million AUD, or roughly $7.2 million USD.

Thevamanogari Manivel, a woman, received the transfer “after an account number was accidentally entered into the payment amount field,” according to court documents shared with CNBC. It took the plaintiffs in the case seven months to notice this error; the defendants are identified as “Manivel and others.”

Manivel is also accused of transferring money to others and spending nearly $1.35 AUD on a home “on behalf of” her sister. A judge has ruled in favor of Crypto.com and said that the property in question needs to be liquidated and the cash that were unintentionally transferred need to be repaid. The matter is scheduled to return to court in October.
