Chris Rock is being enlisted by Netflix to help the streaming service achieve something it has never done: a stand-up special streamed live.
“Chris Rock is about to make history as the first artist to perform LIVE on Netflix!” read a tweet shared Thursday, noting it’ll “premiere live—globally—in early 2023.”
An image of the multi-hyphenate onstage with an iced-out goat in July was prominently featured with the post. Will Smith was the name given to the farm animal, a joke gift from Kevin Hart at Madison Square Garden.
Rock, 57, released Tamborine in 2018 through Netflix, his first comedy special in ten years. The Bo Burnham-directed project debuted five years ago in February. The Tamborine Extended Cut of Chris Rock: Total Blackout, which was released at the beginning of 2021, extended the original by more over a half-hour. The comic and the streaming service both displayed innovation in this situation. “For the first time in history, a remixed version of a special,” Chris stated at the time. “It’s a Netflix special. Not a normal, not a routine. It’s a special.”
