Over the course of 12 rounds, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez completely outclassed Gennady Golovkin to retain his undisputed super-middleweight championship.
It was the third match between the two modern-day greats in Las Vegas, and Alvarez claimed a second victory after a contentious tie in the first fight.
All three judges agreed that Alvarez won after avoiding a comeback attempt by Golovkin in the later rounds, awarding him victories of 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113.
“Thank you my friend, we gave the fans three great fights,” said the Mexican.
Even though their rivalry soured during the four-year wait for the trilogy bout, which saw Alvarez retain the IBF, WBA (Super), WBO, and WBC championships, they hugged warmly after the fight.
Golovkin said: “I want to shake hands with Canelo. Congrats to all his team. He’s a real warrior – if you don’t understand that, you don’t understand nothing.”
